Reviewing the past, anticipating the future: An economic rundown

By: Bob Post, Chief Investment Officer

I have always enjoyed and been intrigued by the financial markets, and this year was no different. With a major regime change in Washington, beginning on Inauguration Day in January, the year was definitely set up to be an interesting one. The year brought significant gains to the financial markets both from fixed income and equity markets, and, from an economic perspective, key sectors of the economy have been performing very well.

So how could the economy be performing so well as there has been no meaningful fiscal policy passed during the year? We’ll dig a little deeper in my article through the following topics:

  • Global manufacturing confidence
  • Consumer confidence
  • CEO confidence
  • Household wealth
  • Delay of the president’s agenda
  • Inflation status
  • What to expect in 2018
