CFPB proposes remittance change to disclosure rule

MARKET COMMENTARY
for the month of May 2014
As advertised, the economic skies brightened as the harsh winter weather faded. Households shook off their cabin fever and returned to the malls, workers were able to get to their jobs, factories revved up production and car buyers flocked to dealerships they avoided during the winter storms. Virtually all key economic data turned stronger in March, establishing momentum that should carry over into the second quarter. More and more, the evidence corroborates the notion that bad weather was primarily responsible for the growth setback in the first quarter.

This is exactly the scenario that the Federal Reserve hoped would play out, justifying its move to scale back monetary stimulus started in January. But to say that the Fed has complete confidence in the economy’s ability to sustain momentum would be a mistake. There’s always the chance that we are simply experiencing a normal rebound that makes things look stronger than they actually are. It will take a few more months of progress to validate expectations by many that 2014 will indeed be the breakout year for the subpar recovery, which is approaching the five-year mark. While lauding the comeback and acknowledging the progress made so far, Fed Chairwomen Yellen continues to fret over the underperforming labor market and the persistence of too-low inflation. + READ MORE
