With the harsh winter behind us, the weather-related impediments that dragged the economy down in the first quarter have faded into the background. And as expected, the green shoots that promise stronger activity ahead started to blossom in March. Consumers returned to auto dealers and malls; homebuilding picked up and manufacturers, led by auto production, increased output. All of these activities suffered cutbacks earlier in the year, largely due to adverse weather conditions. But the rebound fell short of expectations, as did the March jobs report, leaving many to worry that their lofty aspirations for growth this year will once again be frustrated. + READ MORE
